Best HandBrake / FFmpeg settings for converting 4K HEVC to H.264 for older devices?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to work out the best way to convert 4K HEVC (H.265) files to H.264 so they play smoothly on older devices, without losing too much quality or ending up with huge file sizes. I’ve been looking at HandBrake and FFmpeg.

What CRF value, preset and audio settings do you usually recommend for this kind of conversion? And is hardware encoding (NVENC / QuickSync) good enough, or is software x264 still noticeably better at the same file size?
