Basically because the fix for this requires redoing everything, [they will never EVER fix this!](https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=892485) So the solution is to open all links in private windows (which don’t remember cookies which makes it impossible to stay logged in while tracking down a history result).

There is an [addon](https://eccorem.com/apps/improved-history.html?v=0.1.1&type=uninstall) that doesn’t have this unwanted behavior, BUUUUTTTTT, it closes the results pane every time you click outside of the history window, which is worse.
