[Support] Brief

Hello, and thanks for the great feed reader.

I’ve got my own blog going which I’ve hand coded, and which I’ve hand coded an RSS feed for. It works great with Brief, except that I can’t get the favicon to show up, no matter what tags I use. This is the long list I’ve included, but none of them seem to do anything. Any suggestion of a tag I could use that would work with Brief? Thanks!

Hello Denis,
I wanted to express my gratitude for this beautiful reader! It helps a lot to follow my favorite news sites.
I have two questions:
is it possible to export the text somwhere, or e.g. print it to a PDF file? If I try to print, I get only one page from the feed printed.
How can I clean up brief.sqlite file? The size does not decrease when I empty feeds or empty the trash folder. If I delete the file, will it preserve the subscriptions list?
Thanks in advance!

Hello,

There’s no special data export or print support for now.

The brief.sqlite vacuuming support is broken in current Brief versions, but should be fixed in 2.3 which will be released in about a week. In a few days after upgrade, the file should shrink down.

Hello,

Sorry for not replying earlier.
Brief does not support favicons linked from a feed for now; it just fetches /favicon.ico from the website specified in the feed.

Ahhh… place the favicon in the root folder! Although that doesn’t seem to
have fixed my issue with Brief, it has fixed the problem with my favicon
not appearing in Blogger blog rolls. Even better, thanks!

Many podcasts are using rss media enclosures to embed links to their podcasts in their rss feeds, and because they are not in the “content” area of the newfeed, the links are not shown in brief, but are shown when the rss feed is directly viewed in firefox. A example is for soundcloud rss feeds and others.

Things like <enclosure url="http://www.blah.com/blah.mp3" length="1234" type="audio/mp3" />

I am just wondering if they are going to be supported in brief (or if they already are)? Because the links are currently never shown in brief.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

can you please support password-protected RSS feeds?

I’ve some password-protected RSS feeds and these doesn’t work with Brief.

Best regards,

phantom

Media enclosures are not supported at the moment. There is a bug for their support, but it’s low priority for now.

How exactly are these feeds protected? Brief works just fine with feeds that require you to be logged in to some site (well, works until the site logs you out). Could you point me to an example feed?

The problem is that Brief doesn’t save the password. I clean very often the history and cookies of the firefox. So refresh doesn’t work by the next visit.

Here the link to the RSS-Feed: https://www.gamespodcast.de/feed/premium5/

The main page is certainly: https://www.gamespodcast.de

Hello tanriol,

if you give me your e-mail-address, I will send you a rss-feed with password.

Brief definitely should not save the password itself. However, it should probably be able to use a password remembered by Firefox automatically. I’ve opened #239 to keep track of this request.

Hello,
I am currently experiencing some issues with the compatibility of the current installed Brief version (2.3.0) and the version of Mozilla (45.0).

It says that Brief is not be available for Mozilla 45.0.

Do you know when it is going to be working again and/or any workaround?

Thanks in advance!

Brief 2.3 supports Firefox 52.0 and higher. If you can’t update Firefox or don’t want to, I suggest installing the latest Brief 2.2.x. Unfortunately, my time is limited and I can’t spend it supporting Firefox versions older that the oldest Mozilla-supported Firefox ESR.

Thank you very much for your feedback!

I use Firefox on Windows 10, on a Lenovo G700 laptop. I’m having trouble with Brief–it won’t accept new feeds. I’ve tried with lifehacker.com and cbssports.com; in both cases, the feed seems to go through, but I can’t find it anywhere-- “Subscribed Feeds,” “Recently Bookmarked” and “Unsorted Bookmarks.” Brief used to work–and well–but now it won’t take new feeds. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

I just reinstalled Firefox, but the problem still exists–I still can’t add bookmarks. I also uninstalled and reinstalled Brief, but I still can’t add new bookmarks. What do I do now?
