Reps Council Elections Spring 2018 - Analysis

Hi everyone,

As an effort to gather data about the recent Reps Council election, I’ve created the following charts:

https://michaelkohler.github.io/reps-voting-analysis

What do you think? Is there anything you’d be interested in but is not reflected currently? Please note that we don’t want to go down to an individual level of analysis (even though we don’t know who voted for which person).

Cheers,
Michael

I’d be interested in some D&I metrics, do we have gender and age? As in the actual age and not seniority, what you show already?

Technically, being able to reorder tables would be nice, and % of voters on the diversity scales.

And to get all candidates listed by name, of course

We have gender (but not the full list, just binary), which IMHO we shouldn’t use like that. There is no age.

Reorder by what? Not sure I understand that part.

Depending on the viewport, the labels might get cut off. On viewports > 850px it should display all candidates. But yes, we could also do a table below it.

I’d think that diversity is the gender ratio in eligable voters, and inclusion is ratio in actual voters. Having just binary gender might not be perfect, but just that part might already be insightful.

https://michaelkohler.github.io/reps-voting-analysis/#/votersPerCountry could be ordered by number of reps or number of voters in addition to ratio. y’know, when you click on the header to sort ascending/descending by that column.

Thanks for the clarification. I’ve quickly checked and the public Reps API does not returned the “Gender” field. As I’m currently using this API and not direct DB access, this won’t be possible for now then. At some future point we can either 1) export the gender through the API if that is a good idea (not so sure about that), or 2) integrate this into the portal which would also eliminate my ugly hack to get the voting data. I’ve filed an issue in the repo:

I don’t know if the API allows it or not, but I’m wondering if we can map the votes that the candidates get per region. For example, from 890 votes that Daniele get, I want to know how many percentage of them were voted by Reps in Italy.

But regardless, these are beautiful charts, @mkohler. Thanks for putting them together!

As we value the voting privacy of Reps, that info is not available.

That’s completely understandable.

Few questions:
What is the licence of this content?
Who would hold the attribution, reps council?
What is the privacy policy for election data?

Observations:

  1. Not a good practice to compare with Youtube video views. (Youtube is neither the only legitimate platform we allow for videos of reps council election campaigns nor videos are not the only form of campaigns)

  2. Good if we publish this to reps portal or any .mozilla. domain and share the link to reps portal.
