Firefox has always been more than just a browser; it is the primary defender of the open web, user agency, and public trust.
That foundational trust is now under existential attack. We are all facing the rapid rise of an “AI Lemon Market.”
As you know, this is an information asymmetry problem where the web is being flooded with zero-cost AI-generated content (Lemons), making it impossible to distinguish from authentic, high-effort human content (Peaches). This isn’t just a content problem; it’s an economic and social one. It traps the entire ecosystem in a “bad” Nash equilibrium, where:

Misinformation (Lemons) outcompetes authentic journalism.

Human creators are driven from the market.

The “public good” of a trustworthy open web collapses.
This is precisely the kind of systemic, market-driven failure that Mozilla was built to fight.
While other browsers may be forced to act by regulation or corporate interest, Firefox has a unique, mission-driven imperative to lead.
The Proposal: A “Reader View” for Authenticity
The solution must be an open standard, not a proprietary, walled-garden tool. The most viable standard, backed by a broad (and admittedly corporate) coalition, is the C2PA (Content Credentials) open protocol.
We propose that Firefox be the first browser to natively integrate C2PA validation as a core user-empowerment feature—a “Reader View” for authenticity.
By reading the embedded C2PA data (our “Proof-of-Process” log), Firefox can restore agency to the user, displaying a simple, non-intrusive icon in the address bar:

From your vantage point as the stewards of Gecko and the open web, we’d be honored to know the community’s perspective on the technical feasibility of integrating C2PA validation into the browser core. How can we, as a community, build this in a way that is privacy-preserving and truly open?

This is a non-cooperative game; the ‘trust’ problem won’t be solved by one entity alone. Google may set the incentive (Search ranking), but Mozilla sets the standard for what a user-centric web should be. We believe this is a critical opportunity for Firefox to reaffirm its role as the web’s most important public good.
