About this session

Using a design thinking mindset, participants will actively disrupt their understanding around how they think about and associate data with daily activities, to surface their own relationships with data.

Participants will then play a data ethics literacy card game to unpack value tensions at stake in their online interactions. E.g. Is data a form of wealth or raw material input to keep the machinery of surveillance capitalism running (re. Shoshana Zuboff’s work)?

Participants will then co-design a data ethics literacy tool using their data stories and value sensitive design activities, to explore their data relationships to sustain a healthier Internet.

Updated session description:
Using a design thinking mindset and tools, participants will actively disrupt their preconceived notions of data in relation to how they conceptualise data – i.e. how they think about data, associate data with daily activities, and create and use data. Participants will understand their own data stories from this first segment.

A second segment would examine the different notions of value associated with data using a data ethics literacy card game. For example, is data a form of wealth or raw material input to keep the machinery of surveillance capitalism running (with reference to Shoshana Zuboff’s work)? Unearthing these value tensions would provide impetus for change.

In this third segment, participants will co-design a data ethics literacy tool using input from their data stories and value sensitive design activities, to explore the relationships they have with their data in order to sustain a healthier Internet.
