Follow "out the window"?

Some non-trivial number of the phrases we are asked to read contain obvious grammatical errors. I have been reading them as written even though they sometimes make no sense.

Back in the day when I worked in the typesetting industry there was an assumption that when inputting text for typesetting, that we would “follow the manuscript out the window”, meaning follow it exactly as written without changing it because we think it’s wrong.

I think that is the right thing to do in this context, too, but I wonder if such phrases or sentences are actually useful to the project?
