Please stop collecting data without Consent. First Cliqz now Looking Glass

Hi all,

Please stop collecting user data without consent. A lot of users give you data if you just ask.
You can even show a popup: “hey, we are running this study, do you want to be part of it? want to help Mozilla?”.

Most users don’t care but they usually ask their tech friends what browser to use. Their tech friends who use Firefox really care about this sort of stuff.

Even banks started using Firefox since it is a mainstream privacy browser https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/7ei56r/my_bank_will_be_using_firefox/

Here is the “Looking Glass” user feedback.

This Study has spawned at least two three Bugzilla bugs (Bug 1424977 - Is the Looking Glass extension a prank?, Bug 1425171 - about:addons should indicate when an extension is a study and Bug 1425187 - Don’t allow shield studies/experiments without any explanation in description what they do and without related Mozilla bug URL with more detailed information) and a Support.mozilla.org question (Unknown Mozilla dev addon “Looking Glass 1.0.3” on browser… or is it just malware?), as well as 150 173 comments (and counting) on the Firefox subreddit (topic: What is Looking Glass).

This can become a big Public Relations nightmare if not handled correctly.

Why not just blacklist it and remove it first?
After Mozilla can post an official statement in order to explain things. Firefox is doing very well now, I would hate to see such a PR nightmare :frowning:

I would like to see Mozilla apologise for this. I would like to see Mozilla employees be equally mad about this. The silence is frustrating.

It’s ok, everybody makes mistakes but having no discusdion about this after the fact is really not ok. You build trust by speaking openly about issues, not by hiding them. Mozilla is the trust company, not the secret NDAed company.

Sorry, I was misinformed. Looking Glass does not collect data.
