I was watching this episode of TechKnow on Al Jazeera the other day (Giving voice to the voiceless) and found it to be really interesting (keep an eye out for some open source software).
It is not part of the same initiative, but if people want to help on similar projects, a good place to start would be Project Voice Bank.
You do not need to provide any personal details just as much information as you want to around age, gender and location. You are presented with some text to speak and record before submitting it and with new text being made available.
You can do as much or as little as you want, but given how useful it could be, I recommend you give it a try.
