Serviceworke.rs site has been hacked

When I visit https://serviceworke.rs/, this random foreign text appears at the top of the page, and there’s an extra tab in the sidebar with an email link “For Advertising & Contact”. Neither of these things are in the source code. mdn/serviceworker-cookbook: It’s online. It’s offline. It’s a Service Worker! (github.com) I’m not sure where else to report this given that the repo has been archived (why?)

Looking at the internet archive, It looks like what happened is mozilla let the domain lapse sometime around november 2021 https://web.archive.org/web/20211221201620/http://serviceworke.rs/

Then someone bought the domain and in March 2022 they put up this modified version. IGRICE - ServiceWorker Cookbook (archive.org)

Whois records seem to roughly confirm this. Whois serviceworke.rs

How/why could this have happened? What can/should be done?

Hi @nickchomey and welcome to the community

Thanks for reporting. Can you tell me which page(s) on MDN references https://serviceworke.rs?

Michael

As I mentioned/linked/showed screenshot of, it is the homepage.

I think you misunderstood me. What I was asking is: Have you found a link on https://developer.mozilla.org/ that goes to serviceworke.rs? Or in other words: How did you find the serviceworke.rs page?

I’m just a regular forum user but Mozilla seems to be aware of this fact and removed the link from the cookbook on the repo you linked. The repo is also archived.

My mistake indeed. Apologies!

I don’t know if mozilla.org links to it - I found it through google. But the original repo is in mdn, so I figured that, despite abandoning the project, the mozilla team might want to know what has come of it.

I find it odd that they simply let the domain lapse. I doubt much can be done now, but perhaps they could change their practices to prevent such a thing from happening in the future.

Anyway, I’ll just leave this here for mozilla to do with it what it will…

No problem. :slightly_smiling_face:

Let’s summon @schalkneethling, our community manager, to see if he has something to add.

I dont expect anything to come from that - he hasn’t posted in 8 months. I’m deactivating my account now - I want nothing to do with Mozilla after getting all sorts of spam as a result of a misconfigured forum, and just seeing the general mis(un)management of all of this… Damn shame.

I understand your frustration.

Just to mention it: Schalk posted in January this year…

Apologies - I only looked at his replies, not topics.

Anyway, I’m even more aggravated now that I can’t even delete my account myself. What the hell is going on here? I used to associate Mozilla with care, privacy etc… and have seen/experienced nothing but the opposite. I tried to do a good deed by creating this post, and was rewarded with nothing but an enormous headache and a bunch of spam that perhaps will never end.
