First I want to say, it was very difficult to find the thunderbird forum and asking a question. It took a time to find this place.
The question.
If searching in Thunderbird in the sceen with results, in the right upper corner is the option, translated form dutch, Show results as list.
Is there a way / setting to make this default?

The official Thunderbird Support forum, which opens in a browser tab if the user selects Thunderbird Help from the Help menu item, or just presses the F1 key.

Search Topics isn’t were I’m looking for. It is a setting to get an other layout by default. The Show results as list layout.

Late reply, but in case anyone else finds this thread through search: there’s still no built-in setting for this, but I ended up writing a small add-on that does exactly what you’re asking for. Every global search just opens as a list straight away instead of the faceted view.
It’s free, source is on GitHub, and it doesn’t collect any data. Only downside is it can’t be listed on addons.thunderbird.net right now because Mozilla paused reviews of add-ons using Experiment APIs (that’s what this needed, since there’s no official API for it). So it’s a manual install from the xpi for now. Should become unnecessary once TB 154 ships though, since they’re finally building this in natively (bug 580252 got fixed a few days ago).
