Upcoming changes to Contributions on AMO

sorry but it is still not clear for me : may you give me an example of paypal URL with my paypal account user@gmail.com ?

Here’s a slightly edited version of the first email.

Today, contributions rely on an integration between AMO and Paypal, which requires frequent maintenance and has broken multiple times in the last few years. We want to remove this integration, and give you the ability to enter a contributions URL of your choosing. The Contributions button on your listing page would then open a new tab with that URL, rather than open a Paypal popup.

For security reasons, the contributions URL will be restricted to a predetermined set of payment processors. Paypal and Patreon are the obvious initial choices, but we want to hear from you about other payment services you would like to use. Please add your suggestions to this forum thread.

Can I use both Patreon and PayPal links in that field (comma separated)?

No, we will only support one URL for now.

If you have a Paypal account that can receive money, you can go to http://paypal.me/ and create a URL linked to your account.

is this URL correct : https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=user@gmail.com&lc=US&item_name=CardBook&amount=10&currency_code=EUR ?

if yes how it is possible to localize it ?

It’s not on paypal.me, and when I click on it I get a message saying “This recipient is currently unable to receive money”, so no. There’s a guide here on how to use the service.

sorry it is because I use the example above (user@gmail.com)… with my true user it works : https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=philippe1.vigneau@gmail.com&lc=US&item_name=CardBook&amount=10&currency_code=EUR ?

is it OK with it and is is it localizable ?

What if paypal.me does not support users country?

If you know any good alternative service, please propose it here and we’ll consider it for inclusion.

Jorge, what is the acceptable format for paypal.me ?
only “USER_NAME” : https://www.paypal.me/USER_NAME ?
or “USER_NAME” and contribution amount, example $10 : https://www.paypal.me/USER_NAME/10 or https://www.paypal.me/USER_NAME/10usd ?

“good alternative service” - leave as is, but if someone else completes the field for paypal.me then use only this field

Unfortunately paypal.me doesn’t allow you to specify a description or message, so you can’t see why people sent you money. Please also allow paypal.com, so people can add a description…

As far as I know, paypal.me is the way to send users directly to a page where they can give you money. If you can show me an example of a paypal.com URL that goes directly to a page to pay one individual, we can add it to the list of allowed domains.

This is my paypal.me link: https://www.paypal.me/oeekker/send?amount=2.99&currencyCode=USD
And this is the code/url for my paypal.com link, including a description: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=6MLGTSVTYGGJA
On PayPal you can create a button and you can copy the URL to include in an e-mail or on amo :–)

Okay, thanks for the info. I filed an issue to add paypal.com as well.

The new system is now live:

Hi Jorge,

Can you explain where the new contributions URL exists? I don’t see it on the Developer Hub. Is it specified for each addon by an author, or on author’s main page? (I don’t see it anywhere, however)

thanks,
eric

You can find the Contribution URL field in the add-on’s main Edit Information page.

A suggestion:

Liberapay

… not only to do the initial work, but also to maintain …

Liberapay’s recurrent donations system is designed to provide a stable crowdfunded basic income …

A recent improvement:

(Mozilla aside: I chose Liberapay for weekly donations to Matrix.org.)

Are any developers interested in using Liberapay for their add-ons? I wouldn’t want to add support is nobody is going to use it, even though it sounds very interesting in concept.
