We need an override for unsigned extensions in stable or a stable version of developer edition

I use firefox as my day-to-day browser. I’m a developer and I’ve written extensions for myself that I do not intend to publish as they are thrown together solutions to incredibly niche issues. I don’t want to have to always get all these extensions and their updates approved for ad-hoc distribution. I want to just load it into firefox and use it.

I understand allowing the average user to do this is dangerous, but compared to firefox etc Firefox is usually praised for allowing users to override things and do what they want. I’m not saying it should be a simple setting in the normal setitngs, maybe an unlisted about:config setting or something, but it should be there.

For anyone who needs unsigned extensions for a legitimate reason, you are forced to choose between forgoing those extensions or using a less stable browser since developer edition is beta based. I think we should be able to override this behavior in vanilla Firefox but if we absolutely must have a seperate browser can we at least have a prod based one?

This forum isn’t very active and postings here often don’t get useful responses.

Two ways to make suggestions to Mozilla:
• Suggest the idea with Mozilla Connect. https://connect.mozilla.org/
• Report the issue in Bugzilla. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/home

I suggest trying the more active discussion rooms on the Matrix. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Matrix

Personally, I wouldn’t worry about the stability of the Developer edition. I’ve been using Nightly as my primary computer for years and there have only been two times when I needed to drop back to a different version.
