Why is login to Apple or Google app stores now required to obtain Firefox for Android?

I used to be able to do it directly from Mozilla, on Firefox’s homepage. Now, when I really want to avoid patronising the greediest 7, it seems Mozilla, of all organisations, has made that impossible. I tried going to: Download Firefox for Android — Mozilla (UK) — Firefox and poking around, but every avenue seemed hell bent on dragging me to the Glorb.

I very much hope that someone can provide me with a link… I’m not keen to download a beta, just after the regular latest production copy

Also, if this is the wrong place to post this question, please excuse, as this is my first - please point me to the appropriate forum and put it down to an eye-dee ten tee newb problem….

Hi Alex

Support.mozilla.org is the best place to head to for support requests. In terms of Firefox for Android, you can download and sideload a .apk file from Mozilla, but this is not recomended as it would involve turning off important protections on your Android device.

In addition to that, the Google Play infrastructure would not only download and install a copy safely, but it will make sure that you receive updates.

I hope that this helps.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for your reply, but it wasn’t terribly helpful.

Is it a support question? If so, you could have foregone the admonition and saved me several steps by merely providing a link to an .apk, and left me to decide whether to leave my device open to intrusion by promiscuously procuring random executable bits of nefarious cruft hither and yon from hereon out.

It is an overarching policy question. (Firefox used to be safely downloadable from Moz, and used to tell the user itself when it wanted an uprev.)

I appreciate the direction, and I will make use of it by asking support to provide me with a link to the latest build, but my question still stands. Why has Mozilla made this decision?

Tnx,

Alex

It is better for users to have the latest copy of Firefox for Android to make sure they have the latest security and stability updates.

Yes. And therefore, why has Mozilla chosen to no longer provide that service to its users?

That is not something we will have the answer to. Any change happened several years ago and this is a space for contributors.

If you are not looking for user support and have general feedback, you may want to head over to connect.mozilla.org.
