Hacker News Topic on Non-Technical Contribution

I think this topic is interesting for a couple of reasons:

  1. We’re always talking about about how participation opportunities can better connect with non-technical contributors
  2. We’ve played around with the idea of connecting contributors with areas in Mozilla - not traditionally used to working with community.

This is one of the best responses … all about motivation. How do we think about motivation or ask about it when someone shows up at our door?

Definitely interesting. Motivation is fascinating and something we’ve done a few surveys of existing community on, but which we haven’t yet (as far as I know) done surveys of potential community on… its something we wanted to ask of people who’ve come through get involved but not become contributors yet, for example. I do hear contributors talk about tangible job skills theyve gotten. I also feel sure that there is a relatively untapped community of students (college or even high school) who would participate because they want “real world experience” (that and credit for school being their motivators) who haven’t found us and wont if they arent given an explicit pathway. Getting people motivated to start is one thing, getting them motivated to stick around (as addressed in the referenced post) is another. We have a tremendous issue with contributor churn (and user churn - and I wonder how they are and are not similar, actually).
