Important: Update on Mozilla Clubs Announcement

Dear Reps,

I just wanted to let you know about an email that went out to Mozilla Club Captains yesterday.

You may have already seen the blog post that announced that in order to focus on a broader set of movement building activities, the Mozilla Foundation will be ending all staff support for the Mozilla Clubs web literacy program by December 31, 2017.

Here are three main points you should be aware of as you talk to others in the community about these changes:

  • Mozilla Clubs can keep running, there just won’t be Foundation staff support. Club Leaders may remain active in web literacy work through fellowships, research, and curriculum, but Mozilla will no longer directly manage local, on-the-ground web literacy programs. This means we will no longer be running leader calls, answering support questions, or distributing swag.
  • Mozilla Campus Clubs is not shutting down. The Mozilla Campus Clubs program will continue to be supported and staffed by the Mozilla Corporation. Local groups of students with a passion for technology who want to work together to build the open web on University and College campuses are invited to register and participate through the campus clubs program at campus.mozilla.community.
  • The Foundation still cares about web literacy. The Foundation will be providing Club Leaders other ways to stay involved in Mozilla pathways to engage with Mozilla in other ways through their local work. This means giving people from our Learning programs, including Mozilla Clubs, ways to plug into our on-going Internet health work.

Despite this change in the Foundation’s approach the Open Innovation team is actively working to find ways to make a better experience for “Mission Driven Mozillians”. Contributors who are primarily driven by the mission and interested in participating in Mozilla in a variety of ways including teaching, advocating, localizing, evangelizing and testing. We believe that as we advance this work in 2018 we’ll be able to offer new opportunities to support volunteers across the project, including those who are currently Mozilla Club Captains.

For more information about Mozilla Clubs please review the FAQ at the end of the blog post.

If you have additional questions please join the Reps Call tomorrow where we’ll be gathering and answering preliminary questions, and at the Reps call on November 30th the Foundation staff will be joining to answer any additional questions in person.

Thanks!
