Basically because the fix for this requires redoing everything, they will never EVER fix this! So the solution is to open all links in private windows (which don’t remember cookies which makes it impossible to stay logged in while tracking down a history result).
There is an addon that doesn’t have this unwanted behavior, BUUUUTTTTT, it closes the results pane every time you click outside of the history window, which is worse.
