Replacing Pocket - learn, share, explore the open web

Hello!

I am/was a big fan of Pocket. Easy to use, a great place to stash long reads to read at a later date, a mobile app that would allow me to read content offline and a pipeline of new articles that i might find interesting. It was a good thing, so good in fact that I want to continue to have something like it as part of my browsing.

I do not want to rake over peoples concerns and complaints - this could be a positive thing, a great opportunity to use the open web and see what is out there and find a solution that best fits peoples needs.

I need to pull together three main elements:

  • New content
  • Mobile app with offline reading
  • A place to collect the articles together

I am relatively lucky in that I am self hosting services some services and can self host the main web page article store part of the service. I looked at Wallabag, but that seemed to need a domain but I am happy to run it local (lower cost/effort). Shiori is nice, but the mobile offline reading part had a few UX issues.

I am currently using Karakeep - the add-on for Fx desktop is easy to use and the (self hosted) platform is really nice. Yet to try the mobile app, but am tracking a bug for availability of a .apk.

As for content, I welcome any thoughts around Flipboard. Seems like a nice service (they like the fediverse, which is good to see)

Keen to hear what ideas others have - lets learn from each other and go see what is out there.

I tried Omnivore for a long time, but then it was bought by eleven labs. I tried to self-host, and it kind of work, but it was difficult at that time to use a mobile version. Now I’m trying with https://curi.ooo/ it seems that you can self-host too, but I didn’t try.

I will test both options you mention that I didn’t know about.

Thank you for your ideas, really appreciate it.

(Very long time no see, hope you are okay.)

I, too love Pocket and do not want to see it go. I am disappointed that it’s being removed!
