WebThings Project Update -- 1 December 2020

Back in September we announced that the WebThings project is being spun out of Mozilla to an independent, community-led open source effort, called “WebThings” and will move to a new home at webthings.io. More details are provided in that announcement, but in summary the update, tunneling and add-on services associated with all Gateways worldwide will shift from Mozilla to being operated by the community.

This message is intended to give you an update on our progress in that transition, and in particular to preview events to happen in the coming week or so.

We will shortly distribute a new version of WebThings Gateway. That release, WebThings Gateway 1.0, will incorporate a simple (and fully optional) process for migrating your Gateway to the new community infrastructure. You may choose to complete that migration and begin receiving tunneling support and software updates from the community. Alternatively, you may decide not to migrate your Gateway, which means the tunneling service, software updates and add-on library capabilities will cease when Mozilla ends support on December 31, 2020 . No matter what you choose, your Gateway will still work locally as it does today. Through the migration process in WebThings Gateway 1.0 you can register the custom subdomain you’ll use to access your Gateway remotely and will need to accept the privacy policy and terms of service associated with using infrastructure provided by the community, not Mozilla. The steps in that process, along with explanations of the choices you’ll be asked to make, are documented in more detail here. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to raise them in here on Discourse.

If you’ve registered any of your Gateway systems with our tunneling service you will also receive a version of this notice as email to the address you provided in that registration.

We’ll publish additional important information about this overall transition on webthings.io and here in Discourse when WebThings Gateway 1.0 is released, and again as the Mozilla infrastructure is decommissioned on December 31, 2020.

Thank you again for your continued interest in WebThings Gateway, your contributions and your support for the project.

When is the https://webthings.io web site going to become active? It’s nothing more than a request for email addresses with no information. I would have assumed that it would at least have summary faq information about the team and transition by now.

Hi @EricEdberg,

Our fingers are poised on the launch button! We just need to dot some i’s and cross some t’s before going live. Hopefully not long now.

Thank you for your patience
