Do not use email as name for default signup behavior

Feature Request: On user sign-up, your profile should not use your email address as your name by default.

Description

After having a Mozilla Discourse account for a year or two, I just realized on sign up it will default your “profile name” to be the email that you signed up with. I’d imagine for most users this would not be behavior they want, I can’t think of any other sites that publicly show your email address on signup, by default.

Other Discourse servers

I have a couple Discourse accounts with other communities, I’ve never noticed this default behavior before. So, that makes me think it might be something that can be disabled. The profile says “name” is optional.

Today

I checked the “latest posts” and it seems like this is still the default today on Mozilla’s Discourse forum to default your profile name to your email address.

Impact

Content on the Mozilla Discourse server shows up in Google Search, this will include user email addresses.

Just noticed further down there is a similar discussion. I did first search for duplicates, looks like I used the wrong keywords.

I’m frankly surprised privacy-loving Mozilla has gone years without addressing a fairly significant privacy issue on their main forum. What happened to “Privacy by default”?

Hello @Chris_Hayes

sorry for the bad news but i do not think that they will fix it any time as there no person on charge for that they did not even update the discourse version since vertion 2.6 and currently the latest version is version 3.2.2

you can even check the link you share and see the issue on the github and you will find the latest closed issue is way back to 2020

sorry for the bad news and have a nice day
