Hello,
I am new here , since Mozilla has been contributing a lot to its users privacy and so i wanted to contribute my idea
The idea is to create an antivirus program which is either separate Mozilla app or like an add-on for Mozilla Firefox
The antivirus programs available today does not perform well uness it is the paid version and also requests for daily downloads;
I want to create Mozilla antivirus program which is either separate Mozilla app or like an add-on for Mozilla Firefox , the updating of the virus software could be done through
integrating the updater as an add-on the mozilla browser,so that the user does not have to let a seperate app run on the pc for updating it, since people wil be using there browsers
most of the time this shouldnt be a problem
if there is a open sourced antivirus program from mozilla, i am sure atlesast 70% of the people uisng firefox will try the security soultion from their trusted web browser providers ,
the virus database and the reliability of the software will be much increased when we have such a huge community of mozillians working on it
i haven’t worked on any large projects before and this is my first time, i would like to hear your suggestions and opinions
I think that an antivirus is a complex software and without a db is useless.
I think that is better integrate something like clamav that is open source.
Also an antivirus that detect on the page malicious software is difficult infact the windows antivirus add an extension to firefox that check the domain.
Firefox use the google protection o something else (i don’t remember the name) for check the security of the website that you are navigate.
An open source anti virus for firefox that performs as well as those paid anti virus like BitDefender etc is an excellent excellent idea! Huge props to who ever can get that done!
Like for torrenting i dont trust any of the torrent clients out there. But they made an open source firefox torrent client and I am totally comfortable with this one, I can see all the code:
I also dont trust anti virus software, i feel they let you get infected so they can show you that its doing its job by removing it. If we had a firefox open source version i would be all over it.
The problem here is to weight impact against implementation costs (even if this is completely done by volunteers, there are still opportunity costs). Maintaining an antivirus database is something that pretty big companies specialized on and are investing all their time. Further I think that protecting Firefox users is important, nevertheless we have to choose our battles. We should focus on making Firefox and our other products as good as they can be, instead of jumping into another (really big) topic and keep focusing on browser-relevant security such as SSL/TLS, safe browsing and addon-on security reviews.
yeah i agree with Michael Kohler , i just shared the idea which i got , as he said it would take lot of resources to build and maintain an antivirus software and virus database , instead of making a totally independent software maybe we could try to integrate a similar functionality to already existing add-on like light-beam etc.
