2017 new addons.mozilla.org favicon

Old favicon and general icon: favicon
New favicon: favicon2-0

The favicon of addons.mozilla.org hadn’t changed since 2008 and it appears to have been changed to a new one yesterday.

It’s noticeable right away how it wasn’t implemented consistently everywhere where it was used, which is a design failure. For example, the placeholder for add-ons without their own icon is still the old icon, as you can see in this example with a add-on without a custom icon.

Coincidentally, the new favicon is just as flat and bright as the new YouTube (by Google) favicon, also released recently. It earned criticism from the users for being far too bright.

I found no topic like this or better place for it.

The favicon doesn’t necessarily need to match other icons on the site, particularly the ones chosen by developers. The default add-on icon is sort of a developer choice, since they can upload their own icon, or pick from a set of default icons. Changing all of them to the new one would probably cause lots of confusion with developers. Also, the favicon is meant to be a logo for the site, not necessarily a representation of an add-on.

The reason for the update is that the new icon better fits with the upcoming look of Firefox 57. The add-ons site will probably be updated before the final release of Firefox 57 to match this look as well. However, people on pre-release versions of Firefox can already see the new look, and this update makes it fit more consistently.
