Alternative to Heroku

Hi,

We are a small community of 5-10 people who enjoy translating games to Bulgarian as a hobby. We’re currently exploring Pontoon as a platform for our projects, which seems like a great fit for us. According to the documentation, Pontoon is set up to run on Heroku.

I would like to ask if it’s possible to host Pontoon without using Heroku, perhaps on our own hosting setup with an old machine. If that’s not an option, are there any other alternatives for hosting that might be suitable for a small community like ours? We’re looking for free or low-cost solutions since this is purely a hobby project.

I’m also not very familiar with Heroku’s pricing plans and which one would be sufficient for Pontoon to run smoothly for a team of our size. Any advice on the potential costs if we decide to use Heroku would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best regards,

Hi Hulk,

Thank you for your interest in Pontoon!

Indeed, Pontoon is designed to be deployed on Heroku. I understand this is not an ideal scenario for your use case.

Maybe Pontoon Debian would work better?

Hello,

Thank you for the information. I spent quite some time setting up Debian and configuring everything, and I’ve finally reached the point where I need to run the project locally to test it. However, I encountered an issue where the project seems to require HTTP, but browsers refuse to work with HTTP connections on the Debian system due to security restrictions. As a result, I haven’t been able to successfully launch the platform locally for testing.

I’m still working on it and haven’t given up yet. I appreciate the Info and the link you shared—it’s been helpful.

Thank you!
